Principal Message

Hawker School is a unique open plan school. The warm, friendly and inviting atmosphere and positive school culture provides a strong foundation for quality learning, academic excellence and student success in a wide range of areas.

The underpinning philosophy of the school established by the founding principal, Mr Al Leece still thrives today and embraces the loaves and the hyacinths principle in education:

'If thou of fortune be bereft and of thine earthly store hath left, two loaves sell one and with the dole buy hyacinths to feed the soul.'

The loaves are about the core foundation skills: literacy and numeracy and the skills involved in learning. The hyacinths are about passion areas, creativity, curiosity and confidence. It is about happiness and responding to the joy of being alive.

In keeping with this, we provide our students with a significant range of programs including Maths, Literacy, French, Music, Sport and Environment Education.

We provide an inclusive and safe environment for children. Students at Hawker School have diverse backgrounds and come from many countries from around the world.

Hawker School values the integral role parents and carers play in the education of their children. We have a highly supportive and active parent community who value and support quality programs and high learning outcomes for our students.

I welcome anyone who is interested in enrolling a child at Hawker School to arrange a time to visit by contacting us on 6142 2660 or emailing us at info@hawkerps.act.edu.au.

Rubik's Cube Club

Leroy & Robin from Year 5 have engaged with Ms Reid to establish a lunchtime Rubik’s Cube Club. This is a great example of student voice at Hawker School as Leroy and Robin have shown initiative and passion, working with Ms Reid on planning and implementing this club.

Leroy and Robin run the lessons starting with a short video and demonstrations.  All ability levels are welcome and the boys are on hand to upskill both students and teachers (especially Ms Reid)!

P&C Mother's Day Stall

Last week we hosted a Mother’s Day Stall, providing our students with the opportunity to purchase their special gifts.  The stall was very busy and it was lovely to see our students conducting themselves with such beautiful manners and patience.

We’d like to thank all those who helped make the stall possible - our wonderful teachers and staff for being supportive and helpful; everyone in Preschool for running their own mini stall; and all the awesome people who helped with sorting and pricing the gifts, setting up and running the stall and also making handmade items: Sara, Lucy, Alana, Damien, James, Geoff, Diana, Saranya, Nicky and Diana's Mum.

Finally, thank you to all the families who supported the stall - we made a profit of $1,247!  We hope you all had a great Mother’s Day.
